When Laduma Ngxokolo a textile graduate from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, started his research project he had no idea months later he would end up showing his first collection at London Fashion Week.
I first read about Laduma on Pattern & Textile blog. Since then I have done my catch up research only to find out this 25year old has developed such a phenomenal textile and product that maintains local production and sourcing all in South Africa.
He has developed a Xhosa-inspired range of knitwear for amakrwala (Xhosa for new initiates) and the fashion industry has been set ablaze with established designers interested in collaborations before this chap has even had time to really overstand all that has happened.
His inspiration came from Laduma himself being an initiate in which boys between the age of 18 and 23 undergo circumcision as part of a manhood initiation ritual. Once the initiates return home they must burn their entire wardrobe. Their parents must buy them an entire new wardrobe and a part of that wardrobe must be knitwear. This is where he saw a niche' most of the knitwear was not reflecting the Xhosa culture and are of course mainly imports. Read more of Laduma here Africa the Good News

So I was online viewing pics of different collections for 2012 etc and loved what I saw. To see ethnic concepts so strong in high end fashion brings a smile to my face view below.
If you was not at EMF this year you missed a whole lot. I could go on and on about the celebs you should have seen or the crazy cars etc. I could even talk about the hot clothing items and maybe even talk about all the free stuff people would stand in lines for hours for but I won't do that. That's for lames, I would rather tell you about the great black artists that you may never see again because of corporate sponsors. Yes there is a fine line that us as artists walk and there is no room for compromising, if you would stand in line for any amount of time to get a free sample of whatever you are exactly the type of consumer corporations love to have at events. But unfortunately your not the quality consumer that artists require and in most circumstances should not share the same space when it comes to business. ;) That being said my artistic side of me had to be expressed Essence was fun and educational in every aspect. Personally I love shoes I have all kinds of shoes and sneakers and have been known to collect and have a pair for more than a decade or 2. I could waste your time showing you all kind of shoes for the summer fall etc and fashion trends but I won't do that. I will only give you what I think would be the classical buy. Meaning a pair of shoes you can wear next year and your family members may steal years to come. I found these 2 sites at very different times DMI found maybe 2yrs ago and Osborn I found in April thanks to Stephanie Longtchi T writer for Fashionjunkii. Both companies pay attention to details and make the shoes in fair trade environments.

I was introduced to Eton years ago in London by my uncle and clothing connoisseur.
For many years I always respected the craftsmanship that goes into each and every shirt.
This is not some trendy designer shirt based on mass production.
Eton's beginnings go back to 1928 in the little village of Ganghester, Sweden. Annie and David Pettersson created their first made-to-measure shirts.

When you mix texture technique and patterns you can get such beautiful pieces. I would like to thank my friend and comradePita, and Daniel for reminding me of the simple things. About mixing a palette and creating color about finding that inner spirit and allowing ones to get a small peak into that world. Give thanks as my journey of patterns have begun once again.
Now here is another designer I respect on that journey. Marianne Fassler her journey of course spans 2 decades but hope you can enjoy small visual treat.
Today marks a day of excitement for me as the 6th Mozambique Fashion Week begins today.
With 28 young designers, who would not be excited to see the creative innovation about to be showcased. Along with the young designers will be international designers and established African designers set to show on the last days of the event which runs from the 6-11th. I'm not speaking on any particular designer yet as I still want to see what the young ones have to offer.
