As many of you know today is marked as World Aids Day. An opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

While many people across the world show support, Samsara would like to share with you how one of our friends Maxx Moses is showing his. Here is a picture of "Maxx Moses aka Pose2" in the country of Zimbabwe this week with fellow artists Enock aka “Just Kause” in Makokoba.

"I am excited to be here. Our job as artists is to make people think deeper, feel deeper," says Moses, who goes by the tag Pose2. Moses’ artwork has been described by renowned art critic Alexander Salazar as promoting “an environment of longevity, growth, wholeness, and spiritual well-being.” Moses fuses ‘wild style’ and fine art in his work.

An Interview with designer Laduma Ngxokolo

A few weeks ago we wrote on Laduma Ngxokolo of Maxhosa Clothing line. Since then the young designer back from London Fashion Week was pleased to answer a few questions for Samsara. Here is what Laduma had to say...

SB: What is your impression of knitwear today, and how would you explain your design aesthetic?
NGXOKOLO: I think most of today's knitwear is leaning more towards simplicity, which makes them lose character.
My design aesthetics are a modern interpretation of tradition Xhosa aesthetics, it is a way I use to tell the stories of the Xhosa people by making people feel like they are living in that era. I simply do that by using authentic Xhosa colours, motifs, beadwork pieces.

SB: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize one of your pieces?
NGXOKOLO: At the present moment my focus is on traditional Xhosa beadwork, basically I just interpret traditional Xhosa beadwork into motifs and then knit samples to see how it interacts with the environment. Before I make the final garment I ask for feedback from friends, strangers and family members. From then on I go out and hunt for the right colour and material, in most cases I use mohair and merino wool which I source from local spinning mills.

SB: What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?
NGXOKOLO: My best part of conceptualizing a design is when I modify traditional Xhosa motifs in a modern way that would appeal to the viewers and still recognizable as an authentic Xhosa aesthetic.

SB: Do you work on a hand machine like your mom used or a new age machine? What are the pros and cons of each machine?
NGXOKOLO: I use a hand knitting machine for my knitwear which is the same model that my late mother used. Hand knitting machines require a lot of human execution compared to industrial machines do everything automatically that is programmed in it, so my assistant knitters really have to concentrate when they knit.

SB: How do you balance the beading and masculinity in your sweaters?
NGXOKOLO: Beadwork motifs are technically structured in a geometric way, so that works at my advantage for designing men's knitwear because men are more drawn to geometric structures and that makes it convenient for me to design for man.

SB: Describe some of the overwhelming responses you have received from the fashion industry, and share with us who some of those individuals are?
NGXOKOLO: Despite winning the Best Emerging Designer of the year award from Marie Claire Magazine, being nominated for designing 1 of the 10 most beautiful objects in South Africa and nominated for designer of the year by Ikusasa Awards. One of the most epic response I got were from my community members, neighbours, family members, friends and even strangers who continuously say to me thank you for being a voice for us.

SB: Now that you have shown at fashion week, I am sure the number of high end designer that are interested in collaborating with you have increased. Do you intend on collaborating with them or concentrating on building the MaXhosa brand?
NGXOKOLO: Well I did get a couple of invites for collaboration from high end South African designers but I decided that I want to build my own brand first so that I can be well established, get more experience before I can collaborate with these designers that I look up to. Secondly I wanted to preserve the integrity of the brand I established MaXhosa which acknowledges the Xhosa people. But otherwise I am considering to collaborate with other designers in the future.

SB: Do you and your sister have any collaborations planned for the future?
NGXOKOLO: Yes definitely! We are planning to work together once we are established as individuals because we grew up together and love almost the same things, our work sort of has the same ambiance.

SB: List one short term and one long term goal for the MaXhosa brand.
NGXOKOLO: Our short term goal is to win the local South African market that is saturated by brand driven clothing, we believe that they need to be more educated about ethics behind buying clothes.
Our long term goal is to build loyalty with our target market while we still remain true to our aesthetics, vision and we want to contribute to growth in the South African agriculture, textile and clothing industries.

SB: What is the most important advice you can give young designers and entrepreneurs?
NGXOKOLO: I think in order for a designer or entrepreneur to fullfill their ambition, one needs to follow what their heart is feeling at that moment cause it is the driver that leads one towards their destininy.

Recently Drigo from Samsara had an opportunity to reason with the Legendary Bull Wackies. Seeming strong as ever Mr. Wackies seemed delighted that I was quite knowledgeable on his music and his outstanding career over the years. Wackies begun his career under the guidance of Prince Buster and Duke Reid, he is also noted for opening one of the first reggae studio and label in the U.S.

During our convo I recall him referring to a song by Lincoln Sugar Bogga Minott called "Sometime Girl" which was released on 12"under wackies label.. One of the bands that came to my mind was Itopia who I am now patiently awaiting for some classics track. Indeed it was a pleasure to link with one of the legends in this business and please don't be surprised to see what we colab on in the future..

When Laduma Ngxokolo a textile graduate from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, started his research project he had no idea months later he would end up showing his first collection at London Fashion Week.
I first read about Laduma on Pattern & Textile blog. Since then I have done my catch up research only to find out this 25year old has developed such a phenomenal textile and product that maintains local production and sourcing all in South Africa.
He has developed a Xhosa-inspired range of knitwear for amakrwala (Xhosa for new initiates) and the fashion industry has been set ablaze with established designers interested in collaborations before this chap has even had time to really overstand all that has happened.
His inspiration came from Laduma himself being an initiate in which boys between the age of 18 and 23 undergo circumcision as part of a manhood initiation ritual. Once the initiates return home they must burn their entire wardrobe. Their parents must buy them an entire new wardrobe and a part of that wardrobe must be knitwear. This is where he saw a niche' most of the knitwear was not reflecting the Xhosa culture and are of course mainly imports. Read more of Laduma here Africa the Good News

This was a project we started last year, here are some of those pics.

This is the finished project after changing fabric twice and putting it in and out the frustrated pile.

Felt good to start and accomplish this project...
Note this was not a perfected chair the fabric would have needed to have stretch to fit perfect although I am aware of this I still decided to follow through.
The point is I want you to see the concept.

Yes there is a fine line that us as artists walk and there is no room for compromising, if you would stand in line for any amount of time to get a free sample of whatever you are exactly the type of consumer corporations love to have at events. But unfortunately your not the quality consumer that artists require and in most circumstances should not share the same space when it comes to business. ;) That being said my artistic side of me had to be expressed Essence was fun and educational in every aspect. On June 19th, 2011 Father's Day and also the Summer Solstice, Samsara released our first three prints. These limited edition printed tees was available for sale at the SNWMF and are now available online . We sourced the best fitting American Made tee shirt "American Apparel" and worked with 3 printers for the process. The response has been overwhelming and we plan to keep releasing more limited edition tees.
The first three designs to be released was the Samsara "Lion", Samsara X Ras Terms, Samsara X Marcus. Each design carried a significance to our brand as we will describe below.

Samsara Lion

This design was very sentimental to our brand because the Lion carries so many meanings throughout history. According to the 12 Tribes of Israel which carries a symbolic relation to the 12 sons of Yacob "Jacob". The month of July is called Judah and this is the month that both designers of Samsara Boutique are born in. In Judaism the lion symbolises the Lion of Judah. In Christianity the lion's significance is to represent "Yahshua",or "Jesus Christ" , or "Yesus Kristos". The lion also represents royalty, strength, symbol of courage, especially in the pursuit of justice and righteousness. In Egypt the lion symbolises the power of the sun and the power that Ra uses to protect the good and annihilate the wicked. In Buddhism the Buddha sits of a Lion's throne. When the lion comes to us, it is a sign for us to step into our natural birthright of power. Each of us is born powerful and divine. The lion reminds Samsara of this!

Samsara X Ras Terms

Terms has a very unique way of combining the modern and antique look with graffiti ideas and intergalactic symbolism.
This project we worked on together was something that has been in back of the mind for quite some time. It was truly a collaboration and we had a great time putting this together. Terms would call me and say " Bredren I got another idea and we would build and go back and forth with both of us interjecting concepts into this piece. The reasoning that we did just manifested the concept into a reality. I would like to give a special thanks to Ras Terms as this piece embodied a vision and is now a gift we give to you.

Samsara X Marcus

This project is the beginning of many more projects with Marcus and Midnite Band. Being away from the Virgin Islands for so many years this project has begun to bloom into many other projects on island and off island. The beginning process actually happened while I was home in "St. Croix" getting grounded and thus carries strong sentiments . Supplications to HIM is a great album from Midnite, this artwork was inspired during the mystical studio sessions. The word Supplication is such a strong word and action in prayer, it is found 53 times in the Old Testament and 7 times in the New. It refers to bending down and indicates a bowing or kneeling of submission within prayer. This shirt in terms of design and printing process is exactly what we had envisioned for the first release. Nuff respect to Marcus and the Midnite Family.

Mario Epanya came to Paris from Cameroon in 2000, with a great deal of drive and persistence. He landed a highly sought after position as a make up artist and hair stylist with Dessage. He eventually became one of the top make up artist in the business and a trailblazer in both fields.

When speaking with Mario you can feel his enthusiasm and passion for his craft. His humble spirit makes him relatable, but his drive makes him a luminary. Mario is what we would call a genius and his work is what we would call timeless and legendary. After a career in make up and hair styling his artistic vision pioneered a change in his life. Mario bought a camera and began shooting. He would eventually shoot and attempt to shop a Vogue Africa to Conde Nast. With no interest from Conde Nast, he carried on with his love for fashion through the eyes of Mario Epanya.

Mario has since released Winkler Magazine and in its second issue has achieved, in a short time, what many start-up magazines take issues to reach--perfection.Samsara Boutique recently got the opportunity to sit down and share a conversation with Mario. Here is what he had to say.

Samsara Boutique: Before you push the button describe your emotion?
Mario Epanya: Happy

SB: Name three different mediums that influence your work?
Epanya: Africa, Beauty, and Nature

SB: When considering your body of work as a whole, what artistic medium reflects your personality?
Epanya: Nature and Fashion

SB: If you could take your art in any direction, void of commercial influence and without fear of failure or rejection, Where would it lead you?
Epanya: Failure

SB: What was it like working with Katoucha ?
Epanya: Katoucha was very warm and she was like a mother to us. She always gave good advice and took time to listen to us, while pushing and convincing us to work hard., It’s the only way to free yourself.

SB: In terms of Vogue and the Vogue Africa concept, what did you envision for Vogue Africa?
Epanya: It's hard for me to answer this, for me Vogue Africa or a Black Vogue should have existed for years now. It was natural for me to propose a debate about that idea. Africa is so rich. Thanks Conde Nast for saying no and now welcome to Winkler magazine

SB: Where did you come up with the name Winkler for your magazine?
Epanya: I woke one morning with winkler sounds in my head, so I called it Winkler, that's all. ;-)

SB: List two short term and one long term goal for Winkler.
Epanya: Bye Vogue, Glamour and Haper's Bazaar, good morning Winkler magazine, please sit down. :-)

SB: Well two short term goals:
Epanya:
First, I want Winkler to be the official partner of Miss Black France in 2012, which is a major event in the Black beauty community in France.
More about this to come in my next issue.

Second, I hope next year, a Winkler exhibition in Parisan Avant-Garde black and white portraits of young African women in traditional hairstyles.

My long term goal is for the print version to be number one worldwide!

SB: What is the most important advise you can give to young artists and entrepreneurs?
Epanya: To believe in yourself and to work hard to make your dreams become reality.

Being Textile Alchemist is not as easy as one may think. We are often bombarded by so many concepts and ideas, that it can often be like -looking at a documentary produced and shoot by Thierry Guetta. Visual stimulation over-dose.. Fortunately inside all artists brains located approx on the left side of your brain somewhere by pituitary or b/w the cerebral cortex. Located there, is an antenna that all artists have, thankfully these artists share this same daily routine of getting bombarded with visual stimulation. Because of them I can sleep some nights and I thank them for showing me an end result to 1 of the many concepts I thought about.
What in the world would I do with the billboards that liter thousands of dumps across the world?

PROCESS: Each Gorilla Sack is made from a recycled billboard vinyl. These are the same billboards you see along the highway throughout the United States, although our billboards mainly come from Georgia and California. Each pattern piece is hand cut to create a bag that doubles as a piece of art!

If you have not heard of Hideaki Akaiwa by now it is about time for you to google him. One of the many Japanese men of honor and respect. I was listening to talk radio about three days ago and automatically he brought a smile to my face with his actions. Briefly speaking Hideaki was at work when the earthquake and tsunami hit his home town. Now in crisis situations there are 3 types of men those that spring into action, those that stand by the side, or worst of all those that just stand and talk. Hideaki commandeered a wetsuit w/ scuba gear, found his house in dark murky water with everything including glass, cars and trees, found and broke into his house,swam to the upper level where he found his wife of 20years and brought her to safety. He then searched all the rescue places for his mom and when he could not find her after 2 days he went back under and found her trapped in a house and brought her to safety. When asked about the situation he simply replied
"my wife means alot to me" ,"no further questions".

The Internet has been a buzz in recent months about Ms Lauryn Hill. "She looks a mess", "What the hell is she wearing", "What is up with the heavy make up", and What is the deal with this wig."
All these things can be said about anyone even you. She might be portraying a mirrors image for the women in society who feel they need these things to be beautiful.We as humans are evolving and should be allowed to experiment.
So many people consider themselves fans but do not want to allow the true artists to grow. Your love for Lauryn's past music must also be held responsible for stifling her growth as an artist. My suggestions is - when going to see an artists perform that you really love and miss, do try to remember that it is a performance, and not a "CD SING-A-LONG"
I saw first hand with my own eyes and ears, Ms. Lauryn Hill perform at the Jazz in the Gardens in Miami, fl. What was to complain about in Miami was the band and the poor engineering, but the avg patron does not understand these things Lauryn just sounds bad to them. She sounds great to me her voice was strong. The rearranging of her songs were refreshing and the songs she covered were reinvented.
Now style wise she was fly, could have used a lil Samsara up in there but def the biltmore ballroom 80's type frock teamed with red tailored jkt with NY fitted was dope and she owned it.

As a youth one of the fashionable articles of clothing was a gun dung pants. This is when the leg is tapered to fit and the bottom of the jeans is smaller giving a snug fit to showcase your shoes.

This was made popular by the punk rock/Dub-ska heads of the 70s. They coined it pipers and in the mid 80's was a statement worn with Bally shoes or Travelfox by the 80s generation.

Because I came from a family that not only respected craftsmanship, we also knew and supported many as well. Samiel's mom was a seamstress and she taught Samiel how to turn ordinary Levi's into works of art. I remember having 2-tone, 3-tone and even 5tone Levis with the gun dung at the bottom. I think I was in maybe 5thgrade at the time and Samiel was in 8th or 9th when we began to experiment with the machine. At that time, I did not realize it but I had only wanted to learn how to sew so that I would not only have a detailed pair of jeans, but because I wanted something original and handcrafted.

This is what Samsara is and what we have been doing for all our customers over the years, we thank you for your commitment to buy from us, the actual people making each piece giving you the love and respect each article deserves.

Assa Cisse has a love for African fashion and is doing her part in promoting it with her blog. Today I saw a new Post for Angola Fashion Week, so being me I clicked on it. After viewing the pics and reading the article I decided to go to the website of the designer who's work I was viewing.
Lalesso was the name of the brand and I mention them just as a point of reference.
Some people use other people as a muse or reference for designing. Some ppl create ideas and

concepts out of silence. Some ideas, especially ideas made out of recycling or being conservative and eco friendly, can often be created by people that have no idea of each others existence.

When I thought of the concept of making these rope chains and bracelets it was actually a part of a bigger project that tied into the colonialism of textile. The ropes was my concept of how Africa is still under colonial control with majority of sought out and branded fabrics being manufactured in Europe.
Is was with great surprise to see the rope chain on the Angola Fashion Week,World Cup Opening Ceremony and also crochet style.

Reggae Compassionate Act

I was not that surprised today to find signed statements online of so many dancehall artists whose lyrics was not given a "bly" under the Freedom of Speech Act.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation, or both. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to indicate not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech".

Many dancehall artists are being put in uncompromising positions of either signing the agreement, or risk the chance of having there shows cancelled by promoters in cities across the world.
While the agreement actually calls for artists to only sing a certain type of music in Reggae, I find it quite compelling. Personally I can do without hearing any songs regarding a homosexual in any aspect. Why write an entire song dedicated to homosexuality whether it is bashing or not? Within all the songs from all of the artist that signed the petition, I can actually say honestly. I can not recall any hate songs that leave a lasting impression. That genre of dancehall is made specifically for the sound clash party attitude, it is music to get a reaction out of people. It music for that moment, it is already created with the intention of not lasting long and to be marketed to specific individuals.
In closing I would go on in saying that the artists that have been coxed into deciding to sign this agreement, can look at this from another point.
